Seeds to soak first before planting

Every spring, seed-starting season brings out all kinds of little gardening rituals. Some gardeners label every tray with military precision. Others keep notes in worn garden journals. And then there are the jars of seeds soaking on kitchen counters and potting benches the night before planting. Peas, beets, parsley, and several other crops have been soaked before sowing for generations. The practice is simple: give the seeds time to absorb moisture before they ever touch the soil. By planting day, the seed has already begun the first stage of waking up. One reason the habit has stuck around for so long is that it requires almost no extra effort. While beds are being prepared, compost is being spread, and tools are coming out of storage, a small batch of seeds can quietly soak nearby. Not every crop benefits from soaking, and many seeds germinate perfectly well without it. Still, it's one of those practical garden traditions that keeps showing up year after year, passed along because it fits naturally into the rhythm of spring planting.
